Description : The project supports the activities of the Centre “Maria Immaculata Children Education Centre”, an institute run by volunteers and religious located on the outskirts of Nairobi North, near the slums of Kahawa West. The Centre, initially built for 100 children, currently hosts over 500 boys and girls, aged between 3 and 16 years, orphans or children from very poor families who cannot provide them with any support.
Terre Solidali has started rehabilitating the crumbling structures of the Centre, which will be little by little expanded and enabled to meet the growing demands of reception. The project partially funded by the Giorgio e Nino Maurel Association has already contributed to the rehabilitation, enlargement, sanitation and furnishing of the kitchen. The action will considerably improve the general hygiene of the Centre and will generate savings due to the utilisation of appropriate technologies (improved wood burners and water heaters).
Fund-raising activities continue both with public institutions and private citizens, for the purpose of expanding the dormitories, building a food store, and build new toilets and showers.

Descrizione : Il progetto ha appoggiato le attività del Centro “Maria Immaculata”, un istituto gestito da volontari e religiosi situato alla periferia nord di Nairobi, presso la baraccopoli di Kahawa West. Il Centro, costruito inizialmente per 100 bambini e bambine, ne accoglie attualmente quasi 500 in età fra i 3 e i 16 anni, orfani oppure provenienti da famiglie molto povere che non possono provvedere ai loro bisogni essenziali. Terre Solidali ha avviato il rifacimento delle strutture di accoglienza ormai fatiscenti, che sono state ampliate e messe in grado di soddisfare le richieste di accoglienza sempre maggiori. Il progetto, parzialmente finanziato dell’Associazione Giorgio e Nino Maurel, ha permesso il completamento e l’arredo delle cucine, migliorando la situazione igienica in generale e permettendo un risparmio di gestione grazie all’utilizzo di tecnologie appropriate (bruciatori a basso consumo di legna e riscaldamento dell’acqua a induzione). Le raccolta di fondi proseguiranno sia presso istituzioni pubbliche sia presso privati cittadini al fine di ampliare i dormitori, costruire una dispensa e realizzare nuove toilettes e docce.

Results: Enlarged kitchens, food storage facilities and sanitation. Generation of savings in fuelling consumption and water heating.

Risultati : Ampliati e ristrutturati un gruppo cucine, costruiti dispense e magazzini per alimenti (questo nel 2010), riabilitati servizi sanitari e docce. Risparmio di legna per la cucina e per il riscaldamento dell’acqua.
